Panthers Rally, Fall Short In 19-17 Loss To Falcons

Atlanta Falcons v Carolina Panthers

A season of disaster keeps getting worse for the Panthers, as Sunday they had multiple chances to knock off the Falcons at home, only to fall 19-17.

The Cats have lost five in a row, are 3-7-1, and unless they can pull off a miracle, they should probably make New Year’s plans as they won’t be playing past December 28th.

The Panthers battled back from 13 points down in the fourth quarter to take the lead, but after giving up the lead, Graham Gano missed two field goals that could have possibly pulled out the win.

Gano missed a 46-yard field goal try with 1:27 remaining that would have given Carolina a lead and had a 63-yarder for the win blocked as time expired.

The crazy thing in the division that no one wants to take, had the Panthers won, they would have taken sole possession of first place.

Matt Ryan threw for 268 yards and a touchdown, Matt Bryant added four field goals for Atlanta, who built a 16-3 lead until Cam Newton and the Panthers woke up.

Rookie Kelvin Benjamin made a juggling 22-yard touchdown catch in the left corner of the end zone to give the Panthers some life to make it 16-10.

On the next possession, another rookie receiver, Philly Brown, got behind cornerback Robert McClain and caught a 47-yard score as he fell back into the end zone to briefly give the Panthers a 17-16 lead.

Bryant’s 44-yard field goal with 2:08 left put Atlanta ahead for good, as the Panthers couldn’t get Gano closer than 44 yards for a field goal shot.

“We keep getting opportunities and at some point, if it’s important to us, we have to take advantage of it,” center Ryan Kalil said.

Newton overcame two early interceptions to throw for 292 yards, but it wasn’t enough.

The Panthers get a week off next week, then will play at Minnesota November 30th.
