2012 Scouting: Quinton Coples

The coin flip has passed, the Panthers lost, and now we know the team will pick 9th on April 26th. All that’s left now is the guessing. A few weeks ago we started a scouting series to try and dig up some background on some of the likely picks. Today I want to pick that series up with a Defensive Tackle who shined this week at the UNC pro day, Quinton Coples. Coples is 22 and a North Carolina native hailing from Kinston.

First, let’s talk about his college career. Coples is entering the NFL after a junior season where many say he under-performed. He finished the year with 12 starts, 10 sacks and 59 tackles (4th on the team). There is an impression out there that he doesn’t go hard on every play. However, the drop off in tackles from his sophmore year could be due more to his move from End to Tackle, which took some time to adjust to. His measurements at the combine were 6’6″ and 284 lbs so I don’t see him playing on the interior of an NFL line, but he could be just the right fit for a pass rushing Defensive End that could even play OLB in some packages, much like Antwon Applewhite.

Looking at many of the Most recent Mock drafts out there, I’m not seeing Coples mentioned as much as before with regards to the Panthers. Some have him going to Jacksonville at seven and others Buffalo at ten. I think he would be a safe pick for the Panthers at nine. I don’t worry about his “motor” for two reasons. One, the coaches at UNC moved him to a position that took some adjusting to, and two he’s young and if he surrounded with the right people the drive will come. Best case, Coples comes in and is the answer the Panthers has been looking for since Peppers left, worst case he comes in and works behind Hardy and pushes that “project” to finally play to his potential.
