Breaking Ties

Although many are asking questions about the prospect of adding Malcolm Floyd to the roster, is there really any surprise? Panther fans have seen some drastic changes made in recent months including an unfortunate dismissal of original kicker John Kasay. When it appears that the smoke has cleared and we have actually found a squad that could turn a 2-14 season into a 2011 season success, why mess with the flow? Competition.

After a general lack of attention paid to the WR position in previous years, it should be obvious as to why we can’t quit with Armanti Edwards. Word on the street has been boasting that Edwards, along with his new doo, has made a tremendous effort in the off-season to help shape what is to be a promising year for the Panther passing game. But is it enough? If the Panthers sign Floyd, clearly it’s not. It appears that they want to create more competition within the camp for Edwards and the other WR’s and it may not be a bad thing.

Let’s take it back to the first Smith/Muhammoud era when Smith was on the rise and Moose was in his prime. Backed with a solid QB in Jake Delhomme, they were a tough combination for defenses to handle. Moose was never the fastest player, but he didn’t have to be when his sure hands did all the scoring. Smith has always been an inspiration to watch as well as a serious threat when it comes to making a game-changing play.

Now fast forward to the Panthers 2011 team. Smith is a lot older, but still has that explosive ability to make a big play. Now we are looking for another pair of sure hands to complete the set. Armanti Edwards looks to be handling that image in the training camps so far, but we have a long season ahead and he only has 1 year of experience under his belt. If the Panthers bring in Floyd, the competition for that second WR spot will be the best that we’ve had in years, maybe even the history of the franchise. Not to mention the potential with Lafell and the UDFA’s, we can expect to see some blood, sweat and tears in this year’s fight for the #2 spot. Again, only time will tell.
