Panthers Center Ryan Kalil Playing the Waiting Game for a New Deal

Center Ryan Kalil is being patient. Very patient.

The Panthers franchise player has watched while others have gotten deals done, yet he is sitting on the sidelines, waiting for the team to come to terms with their starter.

He has had to sit back the last two years while the the franchise tag has been placed on him, which means he’s operating on a one-year contract. However, Panthers officials have indicated they plan to talk with Kalil about an extension.

“I’ve said before I really do like this place,” Kalil said. “If it works out that I get to stay here, that’s great. I know my family loves the city of Charlotte and all of the Carolinas. But if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t. As of right now, though, I’m focused on this season. I have one year on the contract and that’s what I’ll do – make sure to give the Panthers everything I have.”

Kalil has been his usual laid back self as he’s watched the business of football pick back up after the lockout. While he’s sure the deal will at some point get done, waiting is becoming Kalil’s new hobby.

“It’s been so chaotic in the front office,” Kalil said. “I understand if that’s the case and the Panthers want me here long term, which it sounds like they do. I’m probably low on the priority list, just because of everything that’s going on, and understandably so. There’s still some other guys they need to sign in free agency. So once that starts to settle, I’ve got to imagine they might come talk to me. But until them, I’m not worried about it.”
