After an unhumbling loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Sunday’s NFC Divisional round playoff game, the Panthers were grilled by questions from multiple reporters. Then, one reporter went too far when asking wide receiver Steve Smith if he will be rooting for the Seattle Seahawks to defeat the visiting 49ers in next week’s NFC Conference Championship game.
“You really want me to thump you upside the head?,” Smith said (via NFL.com). “That was the dumbest question, and that’s the second dumbest question you’ve asked. I only cheer for one team. Actually, two teams. My team and my kid’s team. Other than that I can give a bleep.”
Smith ended his response with a smile. However, Smith’s reply tells two things. One, the passion Smith has for the Panthers and two, just how chippy Sunday’s game was. Tensions were obviously high and both teams were on the edge of a brawl. Smith was clearly in no mood to be asked such a question after a tough loss.
