PANTHERS – Staying Hungry and Suring Up the Defense

The Panthers defense against the Saints was not the impressive, aggressive type of defense that Carolina is known for and expects. The defense allowed 31 points to be scored by the high-octane offense of the Saints.

DC Sean McDermott was displeased with the performance and gives credit to the Saints offense. McDermott credits Drew Brees with his sense of timing and delivering the ball. McDermott told Panthers.com, Max Henson, “We’ve got to do a better job with our coverage. When a team throws the ball on you like they did it’s a team thing.”

McDermott’s style of defense, Carolina defense, is fundamentally sound, smart technique, aggressive, and fast. The Panthers didn’t play the way they wanted to and it showed. McDermott: “We have to get over it and learn from it.” The defense made mistakes but McDermott is hopeful that the needed corrections will benefit the team, allowing them to reassess and refocus as they move forward at a critical time in the season. It is a great learning opportunity. McDermott plans to seize the opportunity to “re-evaluate” and “tighten some things up.” McDermott: “We have to stay hungry.”

CB Captain Munnerlyn echo’s McDermott sentiments, “We hungry. We know we didn’t play well. We gave up thirty-one points, that’s not our style of defense. We hungry. We ready. We can’t wait to get back on the field and show that we may be one of the best defenses in the NFL. It’s a bad taste in our mouths but it’s going to be ok.”

DT Kawaan Short also feels like the defense didn’t play up to their standards and capabilities. Short: “We feel like we beat ourselves. We didn’t come out as strong. We got hit in the mouth from the beginning. We didn’t play the Panthers defense that we thought we played.” Short also critiques himself and recognizes some corrections that he can make to better his performance which in turn will also benefit the team.

Safety Mike Mitchell told reporters that the team is staying focused. The loss does not negate all the positives that the Panthers had accomplished during their eight-game winning stretch. Mitchell: “I think we had some things show up that really hadn’t been happening all year.” “Our coaches answered and corrected those things and now we’re focused on improving and playing our game come Sunday.”

Dreyton Florence told Panthers Media, that the needed corrections have been made. The message was to be level-headed after the loss, Florence told Mike Craft, “you never want to be too high or too low.” Take the loss and move forward. “Let’s take our corrections, admit our mistakes, regroup, re-focus and rededicated.” “We have to get back to playing excellent football.”
