Great Expectations

The Panthers were down 16-6 at halftime. Ron Rivera after the game was upset. The team has great expectations and they must continue to play hard and give it their all in each play, every down, every game.

Rivera after watching the game the following day said, “It’s a lot better (than he had previously thought). We played a lot better than I gave us credit for in the first half. I thought the second half is indicative of what we’re capable of. I was hard on the guys in the locker room coming in at halftime. I was disappointed. But I will say this, (you’ve) got to give them (Miami) credit. They fought and played very hard…. We played better…we made some adjustments…we kept them off-balanced.” Rivera believes the team is “growing” and maturing. “We’ve done the things needed to give our team a chance to win.”

The Panthers struggled early on versus Miami and the Panthers newly found success might have put them in that situation. But other factors might have contributed to their struggles. Problems seemed to arise on both sides of the ball: Offense, Defense, and Special Teams; all managed to struggle at different times.

Steve Smith: “We’ve got to look in the mirror…we didn’t play well. We just played terrible. And success sometimes will do that to you. Especially when you’re a young team. We saw first hand what happens when you start reading your own headlines; worrying about your own stats. It was a tough lesson to learn but I think we’re going to learn it and knuckle-down…coach ourselves and be on ourselves a lot more.”

Steve Smith produced, converting a 4th and 10 when the team needed it most; in the last drive of the game.

The Panthers are a young football team. Success cannot undermine the needed preparation and commitment that produced the winning results. Coach Rivera has emphasized and continues to emphasize that the NFL is a marathon and not a sprint. Each player must produce maximized results and must play and continue to play at a high-level.

Charles Johnson was out for the Miami game and “the-next-man-up” was called upon. When your number is called, you’ve got to execute. That is what the TEAM expects. Rivera: “Our young guys did a great job.” Rivera is “optimistic” about Charles Johnson’s injury. Wednesday they will see how C.J. is on the field as he tests his injury. Thursday will be the day where they can assess the injury and soreness. Rivera: “We’re going to be smart. It’s about going forward.”

Strong teams overcome and that is what the Cardiac Cats did. The team showed it’s resolve when they were able to turn it around the second half and secure a win. Rivera: “The guys stepped up and challenged each other in the locker room…the responsibility isn’t just one guy, it’s the whole unit.” The Panthers are rolling on a seven game winning streak. To continue their streak they must continue to progress and put pressure on theirselves.

Steve Smith: “Going forward, we are closer to our goal, which is to be a better football team. And obviously, playing in January. That’s when we want to play. One week at a time, we move closer and closer to that. But we need to get better quickly and improve and play great four quarters and not two average or below average quarters.”

“Winning breeds winning.” And there’s a high-confidence level in the Panthers locker room on the sidelines and on the field.

Mike Mitchell: “We know we can play better…Our team plays with so much heart…We believe in each other…We’re invested in this; we’re in it ‘till the end…We don’t fear anybody…Everybody bring it…’Cuz we’re coming and we’re not afraid. You gotta play us!”
