“Cam is a phenomenal QB”, said Seattle’s HC Pete Carroll. “It’s a difficult match up.” “Their defense has been going crazy lately, turning the ball over and getting it away from their opponents. We have to play well and do the things we always need to do to get a chance to win.”

Dan Quinn, Seahawks Defensive Coordinator, acknowledges that it will be a tough test for Seattle come game time on Sunday. “[Carolina], has a number of featured guys,” said Quinn. Quinn also said that they have “high regard for some of the lineman” guys like Gross and Kalil. “It’s a good challenge for us and one we’re looking forward to.” Quinn recalls the last match up between the Panthers and the Seahawks, calling it a “tough fight.” “Those are the ones you remember.”

The Seahawks have lost two straight and three of their last four season openers and are winless in the past three openers on the road. The last time Seattle won a season opener was on Sept. 10, 2006 at Detroit and will start the season away from home for the 10th time in 14 years.

Carolina has lost four straight season openers.

Both teams are longing to change the tide and set the pace for the year by getting a win.

Seattle will be looking to win the turnover battle. Seattle is 17-3, when they win the turnover battle.
Seattle will also be looking to contain Newton: Sherman will try to bring pressure, forcing Cam to scramble up the middle.
Seattle linebacker Bobby Wagner said he believes his defense can have a repeat performance if the Seahawks make Newton throw instead of allowing him to run.
“I don’t think we let Cam run on us like that,” Wagner said. “We’ll let him throw the ball, try to beat us throwing, which I don’t think he can do.” (via NewsTribune)

“We played that read option well, but last year is last year,” Seattle cornerback Brandon Browner said. “He’s a heck of a football player, and he’s had the whole offseason to try and get better, just like we’re trying to get better. So we’ve got to bring our ‘A’ game, week in and week out. And it starts with Cam Newton.” (via NewsTribune)

Cornerback Richard Sherman said it will be important to keep Newton off balance.
“If he gets any kind of momentum, he’s hard to stop,” Sherman said. “So just keeping him uncomfortable, that’s always the plan – we force them to make a decision, and then we have to make a tackle.” (via NewsTribune)
