PANTHERS –Defense– CONTAIN: Lynch, Wilson, and M. Robinson. To do this, there needs to be consistent pressure. For the defense the penetration starts with the big guys up front (i.e. the front four)>
The Panthers Defense will be looking to get the three and outs and get off the field—dismantling Seattle’s offense.
The Objective: Keep Seattle out of the endzone.
Pressure is key on QB Wilson but Panthers secondary also needs to be disciplined, limit errors and have a good game. Seattle’s offense can also be versatile. Lynch can run and catch the ball so YAC’s (yards after catch) must be to a minimum. Panthers must have solid tackles; no missed tackles. Lynch may very well be Wilson’s go-to-guy. Wilson also likes to target Z. Miller (TE). The Panthers have an outstanding core of Linebackers who can clog up the middle and have the speed to stay on their targets. They can drop back in coverage or choose to rush the QB.
PANTHERS–Offense– BE SMART W/ THE FOOTBALL/ NO TURNOVERS: O-Line needs to protect Cam and open lanes for the RB’s. Cam needs to utilize different receivers in the game plan against Seattle. Using guys like TE Hartsock in the middle of the field and D. Williams as an option Receiver can allow Seattle’s defense to become soft and open up bigger plays down the field. Seattle has an outstanding secondary, with Chancellor, Thomas, and Sherman, so Cam needs to be smart in his decision-making and not force any errant throws down the field that may lead to an interception. Play Smart and move the ball.
During Preseason, the Panthers often found themselves on long 3rd downs. It is imperative to move the ball and set up third and short and CONVERT ON THIRD. Manageable thirds are what is needed and with Tolbert’s return, this is imperative to Carolina—move the chains.
The Panthers need to stick with the Run Game but be CREATIVE in PLAYCALLS. RB’s should continue to run effectively and stick with it! It will open up opportunities down the field. Providing the WR’s can also be effective and help Cam by coming back to the ball! Cam and Co. needs to establish RESPECT for Pass. Cam has the weapons in guys like Olsen, who should be utilized this game. Cam needs to show his precision, and accuracy, which are strengths in his game. Cam needs to show improved performance in this area that Seattle wishes to pressure and expose. They feel that if they can stop Cam from running and force him to throw it increases their chances to win. Cam completed only 3 of 15 passes in the first half against the Seattle’s defense last year in Wk. 5. Cam needs more time to throw—provided the O-Line can be solid enough to allow him to find and make his reads.
