PANTHERS START OFF PRESEASON WITH A WIN AT HOME

Goodtimes: Last night was fun, a Friday night with friends. And after 251 days there was Panthers football. The Panthers game started at 8pm. And at the end of the night I was humming the tune of ‘Sweet Caroline,’ celebrating a preseason win for the Panthers against Chicago. Panthers 24, Chicago 17. Panthers begin the preseason 1-0.

Recap: Seven sacks! Yes, seven! (compared to Chicago’s one) Who were these sack leaders? 1. Mario Addison (1sack) 2.Chase Blackburn(1sack) 3.Craig Roh (1sack) 4.Louis Nzegwu (2sacks) 5. Jason Williams (1sack) 6. Kawaan Short and Big Money, Charles Johnson split one (0.5 + 0.5)

MVP:  Josh Norman had an outstanding night (2 Interceptions for 71 yds and 1 touchdown). Nice pick six!

QB’s: Yes Cam wasn’t on the field for long. Who impressed? I thought Jimmy Clausen’s improvement was noticeable. Out of the three QB’s, and maybe time on the field is a factor, his QB rating was a 72.0. Nice job Jimmy! (compared to D.Anderson 55.7 and C. Newton 56.2)

Rush leader: Goes to Kenjon Barner, who had 9 carries for 37 yrds and 1 TD.

WR’s: Who is going to be the complimentary to #89? Armanti Edwards has made tremendous strides. Edwards faired well having 2 catches for 38 yds. David Gettis is on the top of the list with 3 receptions for 56 yds. Lafell had the only TD out of the bunch.

Let’s not forget the kicker Gano, who I am impressed with. The guy has a strong leg (I watched him kick and make a 63 yrd field goal, tieing the NFL record at Fan Fest). Gano made a 50 yarder last night.

What to look for: I like the depth we have at the WR spot. The ability to stretch the field can be offered by guys like Edwards, Gettis, and Ginn…But we also have other players who can catch and make good gains, guys like Barner and TE Brandon Williams (look for these guys to stretch the field more before it’s all said and done).

Areas to Improve: Barner –hold on to the football. Hands man, hands! Barner says he’s going to “correct it”. Knowing that turnovers can cost a game. Speaking of turnovers, Cam, dude, you can’t stare down your receivers! (Watch the tape). I know Olsen is your go-to-guy and so do other talented Defensive players. C’mon Cam. Cam calls it “disgusting.” You can’t force the ball and that’s what he did says coach, Rivera. I’d like to see D. Anderson (D.A.) improve. He had an off night last night and he and Ginn could not get on the same page. This needs to be corrected.

Next game: Carolina @ Philadelphia 7:30p.m.
