Panthers May Cut Key Players This Offseason

Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com writes that the Carolina Panthers are in such a bad cap position this offseason that they could be forced to cut some key players like CB Chris Gamble, RB DeAngelo Williams and possibly even LB Jon Beason.

According to Yasinskas, Carolina is projected to have a cap number close $136 million, which is pretty high when you consider that 2013?s cap is expected to be just over $120 million.

The Panthers have been very aggressive in locking up their players in recent years, but the problem is that releasing guys like Jonathan Stewart, Steve Smith, and Charles Godfrey would do much to solve their issues.

Yasinskas believes Williams, Gamble, S Haruki Nakamura and DT Ron Edwards are the most likely players to be cut loose. Carolina may also have to approach Benson about restructuring his current deal and after all of this, they still will not have cash to spend on free agents.

I don’t think this will work out the way people thin it will. I think our next GM will have to be a good contract re-negotiator because there will be a lot of that. None of these players could do much better in free agency than what they’d get with the panthers if they renegotiated. Chris gamble only has a year or two left, so he could get an extension. (he wouldn’t be getting a ton of interest as an FA because of his injury and he’s aging. DeAngelo will definitely try and renegotiate if it lets him stay out of free agency. He wants to stay, and carolina would still pay a pretty penny to keep him (just not as much as right now). Having an explosive back like DeAngelo is part of what makes the panthers run game so efficient up the middle when it’s working at it’s best. Teams have no choice but to bight on a play fake to a guy who could take it 70 yards, and after the saints game, (where our crappy offensive line came up against an equally crappy defensive line) I’m convinced that if the O-line does it’s job he’s still a weapon. Beason would be motivated to renegotiate because of his injuries, and early this season he wasn’t quite the same. And honestly it wouldn’t come as a surprise if Ron Edwards got let go, which could open a door for beacon to play in a 3-4. While all of these players may leave, they all have good cause to renegotiate. None of them have ever left the panthers, and I bet they try to stay if it means taking a pay cut. Haruki is definitely gone because Sherrod outplayed him.
