The Headache Continues in Carolina; Rivera Could Be Next to Go

By Michael Brennan

You’d be hard-pressed to find a team in the NFL with more turmoil than the Carolina Panthers; personnel being fired, star players slumping, the injury bug playing a role- yet again, a story fans know all too well. The headlines that surrounded the Panthers during the offseason were all about their ability to win the Super Bowl. The headlines surrounding the Panthers now are more about their inability to win a game.

It’s not unfounded, the criticism in Carolina. In fact, it feels like there is no end in sight for the Panthers. They have lost five straight games, several starting players, and ever so gradually, their playoff hopes. One of the league’s most explosive offenses has dwindled and become mediocre.

Unfortunately for Carolina, the problems are far from solved. Recently, there have even been players speaking out against the coaching staff and the decisions that they have made in-game. Despite the criticism received by the coaching staff, the performance of players has also contributed to the team’s current woes.

Trade winds have been looming during press conferences with DeAngelo Williams and Steve Smith. Despite being badgered with questions about possible moves, both players are still claiming to keep their commitment to Carolina.

All of the noise coming out of Carolina has just become a headache for players and fans alike. While a losing season usually means a top 10 draft pick, in this case, it could mean more personnel being fired. Ron Rivera has been the subject of scrutiny from his players and has fallen under the magnifying glass of NFL analysts. If the losing trend continues, Rivera could be the next big cut for Carolina.
