Shockey Talking Retirement?

Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said that tight end Jeremy Shockey informed him last month that he was considering retirement, Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer reports.

“It was a great conversation and he just said, ‘Well, we’ll see,’ ” Rivera said Thursday at the scouting combine. “With him, who knows?”

Signed to a one-year deal after being released by the New Orleans Saints, Shockey started 13 of 15 games, catching 37 passes for 455 yards and four touchdowns. The Panthers have Greg Olsen, Ben Hartsock, Richie Brockel, Gary Barnidge and Greg Smith signed for 2012.

“We’ve talked about certain things as far as our personnel going forward. He’s most certainly a guy that’s in our plans,” Rivera added. “But we’ll see how it all unfolds as we go through it. I think things may be up to him.”
