DE Charles Johnson Says He Won’t Go vs Saints

Panthers defensive end Charles Johnson is listed as “Doubtful” with a back injury on the team’s injury report, but told his followers on Twitter that he won’t be playing in the regular season finale against the Saints on Sunday.

“Sorry #panthernation I want be playing Sunday. Season over for me. But we still gonna kick some ass,” Johnson wrote on Saturday morning.

Coming off a breakout 2010 season, where he set a career-high with 11.5 quarterback sacks, Johnson was signed to a six-year, $76 million contract extension that included a $30 million signing bonus when the lockout ended in July.

In 15 games in 2011, Johnson had 41 tackles and a team-high nine quarterback sacks.

Johnson’s absence is good news for Drew Brees and the Saints, who have already clinched the NFC South, but have a shot at a first-round bye with a win coupled with a loss or tie by the San Francisco 49ers, who will be playing the St. Louis Rams at the same time the Saints and Panthers are playing in New Orleans.
