Panthers pounded by Titans; 30-3

The rookie finally looked like a rookie.

Chris Johnson ran for a season-high 130 yards and a touchdown, and the Titans used a suffocating defense to contain Cam Newton as the Panthers got stomped 30-3 on Sunday.

The Titans (5-4) sacked Newton five times and limited Carolina’s big-play aerial attack. Carolina (2-7) came in ranked fifth in the league on offense and first in plays of 20-plus yards, but the Titans corralled Newton to 209 yards passing and held Steve Smith’s, the NFC’s leading receiver, to 33 yards.

Johnson had 174 yards from scrimmage and topped the century mark for the first time since Week 4 at Cleveland.

Also, Marc Mariani returned a punt 79 yards for a touchdown, and Matt Hasselbeck tossed a 43-yard touchdown strike to Damian Williams, who finished with 107 yards receiving for the Titans.

For the unbalanced Panthers, they allowed the Titans to score on their first two drives, one off of a Greg Olsen fumble at the Tennessee 17, thus hindering them to attempt only 19 rushes despite averaging 5.9 yards per carry.

Needless to say, six three and outs and being down 17-0 early in the second quarter will affect your game plan and alter your ability to run the football.

Next: Sunday November 20 at Detroit Lions, 1 ET.
