Newton Named the Starter for Week One vs Cardinals

Panthers head coach Ron Rivera made it official on Thursday night, announcing that first overall pick Cam Newton will be the starting quarterback against the Cardinals on September 11th.

Newton completed just 42 percent of his pass attempts during the preseason for 300 yards and a touchdown, but had a team-high 86 yards rushing and a touchdown on the ground.

“I’m very pleased with his energy and how he handled things,” Rivera said of Newton via Steve Reed of The Gaston Gazette. “His mobility flashed and that was one of the big positives that really gives us an indicator at what he can as a quarterback in terms of throwing the ball and running the ball.”

Reed adds that veteran Derek Anderson appears to have surpassed 2010 second-round pick Jimmy Clausen on the depth chart. A 2007 Pro Bowler with the Cleveland Browns, Anderson previously played for offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski and could be the No. 2 to open the season.
