Cats Waive DT Kentwan Balmer

The Panthers have waived defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer, Steve Reed of reports.

A 2008 first-round pick out of North Carolina by the 49ers, Balmer was traded to the Seahawks last August. Balmer started a career-high 11 games and totaled 43 tackles while playing multiple positions along the Seahawks’ four-man front. Balmer has zero quarterback sacks in his 43-game career.

The Seahawks waived Balmer last week and he was claimed by the Panthers, who lacked experience and depth at the defensive tackle position even before free agent pickup Ron Edwards was placed on injured reserve with a torn triceps.

As good as the opportunity in Carolina looked on paper for Balmer, his seven days with the team ended with zero appearances in the preseason.

The 6-foot-4, 315-pound Balmer won’t turn 25 until October and his current contract includes a $622,000 base salary. Balmer is also due to earn an $80,000 roster bonus if he were on the roster for the second regular season game, and has $5,000 in per game roster bonuses for each game after that.
