Short and Sweet

There won’t be much in this last preseason game, unfortunately. Pittsburgh is a great team to run an offense against and I’m glad the Panthers are getting some good snaps against them. However, some snaps is not enough and the Steelers won’t leave their starters in for very long. A team that has a lot to prove before the season opener against Arizona, will have little time to show what they can do. There are some clear expectations of what we want to see tonight.

Cam Newton as a confident QB against an elite NFL defense. This is a long shot for a rookie, but he has some upsides. His size, his ability to stretch the play, and his running. If Cam can stay alive long enough to make some good passes down field and maybe a TD, consider that enough for the starting job.

The defense stopping the run and pressuring the QB. It’s no secret that the key to forcing a turnover is pressure on the QB. The Steelers are a tough team to break down. A couple of forced fumbles or an interception will gain back some of the confidence Panther fans are looking for.

Coaches mixing up the playbook. The first game we pulled out some trick plays and they paid off. A few of the pass plays were boot legs, which gives Cam the opportunity to move and make a good play. The coaches need to explore options that work to the players assets so there can be more of a repertoire for the regular season.

Returning Players. Linebacker Job Beason is still out, but is expected to return by week 2 or 3. DE Greg Hardy has returned from injury and will play tonight to add some heat to the defensive line. Also, we have anxiously awaited the return of G Jeff Otah. If the run game is strong tonight, he is probably the reason why.
