Panthers First Cuts: Round Two

With a combination of injured reserve moves and cuts the Panthers have whittled their roster from 89 to 80 just in time for the 4pm deadline.

Lets take a look at the moves.

Injured Reserve

  • Geoff Schwartz (T) Placed on IR (hip). This of course is a huge hit for the Panthers offensive line and a continuation of the now annual tradition of losing a key lineman for the year. Expect the Panthers to pay close attention to who is available after teams cuts today and final cuts Saturday.
  • Gary Barnidge (TE) Placed on IR (broken ankle). Again, this is a tough one because Barnidge was shaping up nicely. But with Shockey and Olsen in the mix the team should be okay.
  • Zack Williams (C) Placed on IR (torn acl). Another line hit. Again I expect moves on both lines.
  • David Gettis (WR) Placed on IR (torn acl). We knew he was done for the season, this was just a formality. It does show that the Panthers have faith he could grow into a nice receiver once he’s healthy.

  • Duke Robinson (G) and Tony Pike (QB) cut. – Ni ether of these draftees from the past couple seasons ever really panned out. Pike has been repeatedly injured.
  • Chris Massey (RB) cut. – The Panthers brought him in for a look, but appear to be sticking with J.J. Jansen

So that it, the team is down to 80 and in 4 days has to cut or put on IR 27 more players. Its going to be quite interesting to see exactly who they hang on to from this shortened off-season, and even more importantly who they go pick-up to help a struggling team in some very needed areas. Check back as the week continues as Panthers Gab will take a look at who becomes available and what moves the Panthers make.
