Panthers Begin First Round of Cuts

It’s that time of year again, by Tuesday all NFL teams must trim their rosters from the 90 they began camp with down to 80. Expect to see the Panthers cut players as well as adding some needed pieces that other teams have cut loose. So, let’s take a look at the moves made over the weekend thus far.

Anthony Santella (P) cut. – Umdrafted fre agent rookie out of Illinois. With Baker in fine form Santella never really had a chance of making the team.

Louis Ellis (DT) and Tommie Duhart (DT) – These cuts are interesting, as bad as it defensive line looked on Thursday you would think they need all the help they can get. But Durhart has been a Carolina practice squad member for the last three seasons and Ellis is a untested rookie. I Expect us to replace these guys with a seasoned DT once the other teams around the league start to cut people loose.

Trent Guy (WR) cut. – Guy had a few nice returns in the Game against Cincinnati on Thursday, but this second year player out of Louisville never quite found his place among the receiving corps and in a crowded field of questionable talent, he was the odd man out.

One of the more interesting transactions of the weekend was the signing of long snapper Chris Massey. Panthers have had a pretty stable and successful long snapper for the last couple seasons in J.J. Jansen , who seemed to have the job sewn up this off-season. This is either a case of a talented guy being cut and the Panthers picking him up just to check him out, or there is something up with Jansen and Massey is the insurance policy. Hell as bad as the offensive line has been, maybe they just wanted another warm body to help block.

Expect more moves in the next 48 hours. And of course, be sure to check in here at Panthers Gab to get all the detail and analysis when those moves happen.
