Moon Pulling for Newton to be the Panthers Starter

Former Oilers QB and Hall of Famer Warren Moon is in the corner for the Panthers to make number one overall pick Cam Newton the teams starter from day one.

“I think I’m pulling for (Newton) a little bit more than the others because I probably put my neck out on the line a little bit more for him than I have for any of the other guys as far as defending him in the media and things like that,” Moon told PFW. “My reputation is kind of on the line as well, but I think a lot of that was answered by what football people said about Cam Newton by making him the No. 1 overall pick.”

Moon became a mentor to Newton this offseason when Cam’s father, Cecil, asked Moon to become part of Cam’s inner circle as he prepared for the draft process after winning the Heisman Trophy and leading Auburn to a national title. Moon said he first was introduced to Cam when he was a junior in high school at a football camp Moon and other retired players held for young African-American quarterbacks.

“We got a chance to work with him there, saw this big kid with all this raw ability,” Moon said. “We knew that one day he was going to be a player and we kind of kept our eyes on him over the years.”

  1. Mr CatWalker says:

I think Cam can do pretty good if the offensive line can hold blocks a little longer. Any quarterback that’s playing behind the same line would be sacked way more or they will get hurt running for their lives. I just hope Carolina can get their act together before the team loses their drive to succeed.
