What’s Happening Now

The Panthers have closed up shop in Wofford and are back at Bank of America Stadium to get ready for the season opener against the Arizona Cardinals. Meanwhile, there has been a lot of buzz around a few issues that may affect some Panther players in the future. Let’s take a look at what’s happening now.

Many of you may have already heard Jon Beason’s name in connection with Nevin Shapiro, who was recently arrested for his hand in a $900 million ponzi scheme and providing impermissable benefits to players who formerly played at Miami University. Beason has denied any claims that he accepted benefits and as of right now, is not commenting on the issue. Smart move Beast. Even if he did accept benefits, and I’m not saying he did, there would be nothing to gain and more to lose from getting involved. Not only is this an NCAA issue, but it’s time to get focused on the now and getting back on the field.

The supplemental draft is set for Monday and there is a lot of buz around Tyrelle Pryor on if any teams are looking to draft him. But we already have a young QB in the system. How does the draft affect the Panthers? Well, it doesn’t really. Although, DE Michael McAdoo from North Carolina has peaked some interest as a possible future investment. His stats are not stellar, but with a chance to develop his skills, he might be a good pick up to give the Cats something to trade with. They could possibly use a round 6 draft pick as part of a trade deal for someone we may need after the preseason. With injuries creeping up on some key players, it might be worth the thought.

Finally, at long last, Cam Newton will be taking the field as starting QB against the Miami Dolphins tomorrow. Fans have been waiting somewhat impatiently for this moment since he was signed as the #1 pick in the draft. Well, it has arrived and we can finally see what the kid has got with the starting offense against a starting Dolphins defense. The only thing I have to say is “protect the QB, please!” He will most likely only play for the first quarter, but at times Miami’s D has been a force to be reckoned with. If Cam does well, it’s possible Rivera will be calling his name again as the starting QB in the regular season opener at Arizona.
