Sources have indicated that the Panthers are going to stay with the plan and keep unhappy WR Steve Smith. There was rumors all offseason that Carolina was going to move Smith, but the team has decided to keep the veteran.
Smith said he had none but indicated he would report to camp with his teammates as scheduled on Friday, despite many thinking he was not happy with the team.
The WR had expressed his frustration to team management after last season, which was his worst statistically for a full year since becoming a starter. Although he says he never demanded a trade, Smith told Pro Football Weekly this offseason he wanted to go to a “competitive situation,” wherever that might be.
League sources say GM Marty Hurney made calls around the league to gauge the interest level in Smith, but there were no substantive talks with any specific team.
