Panthers Expected to be a Major Player in Free Agency

If the parameters of the new CBA reported yesterday are correct, the Carolina Panthers will have 19 unrestricted free agents including running back DeAngelo Williams, linebackers Thomas Davis and James Anderson, defensive end Charles Johnson, quarterback Matt Moore, cornerback Richard Marshall, tight ends Jeff King and Dante Rosario and defensive tackle Derek Landri.

According to Steve Reed of the Gaston Gazette, the Panthers are estimated to have more than $70 million to spend under next year’s salary cap. Obviously a good bit of that will be spent on re-signing their own free agents — general manager Marty Hurney has said that is a top priority — but also look for the Panthers to be very active in free agency.

Given a very short pre-season, I’d expect experienced players to do well this year. While the draft class of the Panthers may well be good, they don’t have NFL experience and throwing rookies into the fire is not necessarily a good idea.

It’s my feeling that taxi squad players will be of a very high caliber this year and next year you’ll have a huge crop of UDFA’s to choose from.

Look to the rookies to be role and situation players early this year and maybe later evolve into starters.
