Family Issues Kept Steve Smith Away From Panthers Workouts

Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith has not attended any of the informal, player-run workouts his teammates have held this offseason. Without getting into specifics, last night Smith shed some light on why he’s been absent.

“Right now there’s a lot of things on my plate with my wife and her health. My family needs me at home, and that’s the most important thing,” Smith said, according to Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer.

“Football right now is the last thing on my mind when it comes to some of the things in the last month that we’ve been dealing with as a family.”

A third-round pick in 2001 out of Utah, Smith has spent is entire career with the Panthers. The four-time Pro Bowler is the franchise’s all-time leader in touchdown receptions, and is within striking distance of passing Muhsin Muhammad for the top spot in club history in receptions and receiving yards.

Smith is coming off a season where he caught 46 passes for 554 yards and two touchdowns, his lowest receiving output in a full season since his rookie season, when he was an All-Pro return specialist.
