Hurney Defends Auburn QB Cam Newton

Appearing on CBS Radio in Charlotte Friday, Panthers General Manager Marty Hurney defended Auburn quarterback Cam Newton against Pro Football Weekly draft analyst Nolan Nawrocki’s brutal scouting report on the 2010 Heisman winner.

“I don’t pay much attention,” said Hurney. “(Nolan Nawrocki) has never met Cam Newton. So who’s he talked to? He says he’s talking to decision makers. We have the No. 1 pick. He hasn’t talked to me.” Hurney is a known backer of Jimmy Clausen, but he went out of his way to defend Newton against Nawrocki’s attack. Added Hurney, “(Nawrocki) did his job, he’s selling books.”

  1. Bob G. says:

No, No, No, No, No! Newton has character issues galore… always a red flag. He’s also a “take off running” first, pass second QB – exciting, sure… but teams with “exciting” QB’s either miss the playoffs, or get eliminated early. How many rings does Vick have? How many Super Bowls did the Steelers win when Kordell Stewart was their QB? Elite teams know how to stop these guys, and with rare exception, elite teams are what you’ll face in the post season.

If the Panthers draft this guy, it will confirm the fact that Jerry Richardson has radically changed as an owner. He used to be all about player character – not anymore if he drafts Newton. He also used to be about winning – but he already through much of that credibility away by cutting payroll by $50M last year and keeping the Fox coaching staff around only because he didn’t want to pay them not to coach. What’s left of his cred will go if the Panthers draft Drafting Newton. Cam Newton will put butts in the seats, sure, and that means money… which is good for Richardson (and as an owner, he has a right to make money), but not so good for the fans (especially since the fans are the one whose money Richardson is taking). Look at it this way… as a fan, as yourself this: how long will “exciting” be fun, if “exciting” doesn’t translate to W’s?
