Former NFL Coach Reeves Thinks the Panthers Should Draft Newton

Dan Reeves is a big fan of Cam Newton, and told the Charlotte Observer that he thinks the Cats should take Newton with the #1 overall pick.

Former NFL head coach Dan Reeves thinks the Carolina Panthers should retain the top pick and pick a quarterback according to Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer. “If I’m them, I’m taking Cam Newton,” former Falcons and Broncos Coach Dan Reeves said. “I think that guy is going to be a great player. “You can’t win without one, and trust me, when I lost them, I got fired.” “I can teach a guy to get up under center,” Reeves said. “But I can’t teach a guy to throw. He has a tremendous arm, and I think he’s going to be really effective no matter what he was doing in college. “I mean, how many times do you see Peyton Manning or Tom Brady in the shotgun? A lot.”

No, no, no. Cam Newton is a project – he has tremendous potential, but the list of high-draft-pick QB’s with potential who have failed miserably in the NFL is long and painful. Also, while they might make games exciting, teams with “exciting” quarterbacks like Newton, who look to take off running at the tiniest hint of opportunity, don’t win rings. How many rings has Vick got? Just getting to the playoffs shouldn’t be the goal, but that’s been the pinnacle for teams with “exciting” quarterbacks. It might work in the regular season, but come playoff time, elite teams don’t lose to ad-libbing QB’s. No, the Panthers should not draft Newton. They need to trade for or sign a seasoned QB, and use the pick for a monster DE… but if they feel they have to take a QB, trade down, draft one who is more NFL ready than Newton, and use the extra picks they’ll get to fill other areas of need!
