Newton Can’t NOT be the Panthers Pick at #1

As pointed out in today’s Charlotte Observer, there’s no denying that the Panthers seem to have their eyes at this point fixed on taking one player come April 28th at the NFL Draft – Auburn QB Cam Newton.

The Panthers will work out Newton today, this after having six scouts at Auburn’s Pro Day, and also having a couple meals with Newton and his family.

As the story points out, this franchise for too many years has watched other teams with franchise QB’s – like Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay, Mike Vick in Atlanta and now Philly, Ben Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh, and even Peyton Manning in Indy. It’s time for the Panthers to get their own franchise QB – and Newton’s that guy.

If the Panthers are ever going to compete in the NFC South with the likes of the Saints, Falcons and improving Bucs, they need a thrower that can make plays. Not the likes of the Jake Delhomme’s and it was even proven this year that while Jimmy Clausen is a nice QB, he’s not nearly enough for this team to reach the next level.

Some have thought that with Ron Rivera being a former defensive coordinator that he’s more prone to go with a defensive player with the first pick. He would be making a mistake. Newton can do more than a few things this team needs – sell seats, generate interest, and most importantly – make plays.

So don’t be surprised if come over a month from now the Panthers take Cam Newton with the #1 overall pick. He’s worth the risk, and he could very well be the type of QB that could lead the Panthers for years to come.

Boom or Bust….? This is not how you rebuild a franchise? Proven talent… Newton played one year…. Take a vet QB in free agency.

    Yeah, but what a year!!

Finally someone with a sense of reality! If the Panthers pass on Cam, they will regret it! He’s going to give the Cats something they haven’t had forever – a Franchise QB!!!!

Tony, when has taken a veteran QB ever worked?! Look at Miami a few years back, they took Jake Long, and picked up Chad Pennington. Now a few years later, Long is great, but they are still a mess at the QB spot.

Take Newton, leave him in there for 2-3 years, and watch this team finally get back in the postseason.

3 schools in 3 yrs after booted for a felony theft and cheating at Florida winning a community college title as a soph before getting sold in the SEC but he didnt know about the big loot? Yea sure buddy. AU was rigged a pro team before he arrived. Clausen would have won it there as sorry as he is or maybe even PeeWee Herman. Go with a vet.
Train wreck Newton will ruin any NFL team. The Panthers are on the brink of skipping town to the west coast anyway when JR kicks out. This would push them over the edge prematurely.
