Kasay misses a shot to give the Panthers their second win; lose to Browns 24-23

The Panthers once again showed signs of life, but in the end it came down to a veteran guy missing a kick that normally he would make in his sleep.

But that is how the 2010 season has gone for the Panthers, and it was like that again on Sunday as the team dropped to 1-10 after a gut wrenching 24-23 loss in Cleveland to the Browns.

Carolina trailed 21-7 at the half, but rallied to take a 23-21 lead in the fourth quarter on a John Kasay field goal of 43 yards with 7:01 left.

Cleveland came back with a Phil Dawson 41-yard field goal, and even after Jimmy Clausen threw a pick to Joe Haden of the Browns with 1:28 left, the Panthers still had a shot.

After the Browns punted, Clausen got the Panthers to the Cleveland 24 after hitting a great pass play to Brandon LaFell for 28 yards, and left it in the hands of Kasay from 42 yards out.

And he missed it.

The vet grazed the right upright, but it was no good, a crushing cruel blow to the Panthers in a game they should have won considering how hard they came back after trailing all day.

“To credit all the guys on the team, we just keep battling,” Clausen said. “There’s no giving up on this team, John Fox and the coaches did a great job and we have a great attitude.”

Nevertheless, the Panthers could not stop Browns RB Peyton Hillis, who ran for 131 yards on 26 carries and gave the Browns a 21-7 lead with scoring all three Cleveland TD’s.

The Panthers were led by Clausen who was 16-for-28 for 195 yards with a pick. Mike Goodson had a 26-yard TD run early in the first, but ended with just 55 yards. Jonathan Stewart had 98 yards on 12 carries.

While they hung in and there was signs of life all day, it all comes down to wins and losses, and the Panthers look like a team that is simply going to crawl to the finish of 2010.
