Panthers again lackluster in preseason finale 16-3

If the Panthers think they are ready for the regular season, they may be the only ones.

Thursday night in Pittsburgh the Panthers once again were pushed around by the big bad Steelers, losing 16-3 and barley putting up a fight in a preseason game where they could have showed some spunk.

The Steelers outgained the Panthers 280 to 123, and outgained them on the ground 175 to 72. The problem with those numbers is two-fold – the Panthers couldn’t run, and couldn’t stop the run. Not a good combo heading into the regular season.

As far as the QB situation goes, Matt Moore and Jimmy Clasuen both didn’t play, leaving the QB snaps to No. 3 quarterback Hunter Cantwel and No. 4 Tony Pike. Dantrell Savage led the Panthers with 33 yards on the ground.

The Steelers took a 3-0 lead on a Jeff Reed field goal in the first quarter, then went up 13-0 at the half when Dennis Dixon hit rookie Emmanuel Sanders with a 23-yard TD pass and Reed kicked another field goal.

Reed hit a field goal in the 3rd quarter, and then the Panthers got their only points of the night, when John Kasay hit a 51-yard field goal nine seconds into the fourth quarter.

Overall, the team (1-3) has an awful lot of work to do before September 12th when they travel to play the Giants in the regular season opener at the new Meadowlands Stadium.
