Could Hunter Cantwell Be a Surprise Starter at QB?

In an interesting turn of events for the Panthers, the Charlotte Observer reports that Hunter Cantwell could step in if Matt Moore has issues and take over the QB role:

The last time we checked in on the Carolina Panthers’ quarterback depth battle, there was an interesting idea in play; namely, if Matt Moore struggles early on, perhaps this would increase the pressure on John Fox to throw Jimmy Clausen into the fire, given that he’s the high-ceiling QB of the future. However, Hunter Cantwell has solidified his status as the No. 2 QB on the depth this offseason, and is a legitimate contender to be the starting QB at some point. The Panthers have a historical trend of quarterback development in that instead of drafting fully-formed, high-profile players, the team has produced diamonds out of players thought to be lumps of coal, such as Jake Delhomme and Moore. Of course, that trend was reversed this offseason with the drafting of Clausen in the second round and Tony Pike in the sixth.

  1. John says:

The staff has always had good things to say about Cantwell. He has a very strong arm and has been in the system longer than Clausen. I don’t find him being second on the depth chart right now all that surprising or enlightening really though. I think it would take a complete meltdown by Moore for anyone else to start in his place this season. And Clausen isn’t signed yet. This may be a bit of gamemanship to keep him from getting to greedy and to see if there is trade interest out there for Cantwell at the same time.
