What’s Going On?

Well, CaroPanFans, it’s been a heck of a week in Charlotte, hasn’t it? We have Julius Peppers announcing he wants a divorce, and coaches tripping over themselves in a race to the exit sign. It’s been a little disturbing here in the Queen City.

The Panthers lost quarterbacks coach Mike McCoy to Denver, but this may be a blessing in disguise. McCoy is seen as an up-and comer in the league, and was thought of to be the successor to Dan Henning when he was let go, but then Jeff Davidson was hired as offensive coordinator. McCoy appears to have not done a whole lot in developing any of Carolina’s quarterbacks; moreover, Jake Delhomme seemed to regress a little each year during his tenure, and what about supposed savior Matt Moore…

Defensive coordinator Mike Trgovac’s departure is the most surprising of the lot, being that he just announced he was staying. Please do not get too excited, as I know a lot of you feel we need some new blood at the DC; Pat Yasinskas of brought up a very relevant point in a recent blog – it’s rumored Trgovac could be looking to a reunion with former Panthers’ DC Jack Del Rio down in Jacksonville. Here’s the rub: the Jaguars are supposedly pondering a change to a 3-4 defense, and Yasinskas thinks that Peppers never had a beef with Trgo, and well, let’s not think even about it… at least it would be the AFC. ( If you live in the Panthers’ viewing area, you may remember Pat Yasinskas as one of the fine sportswriters from the Charlotte Observer. He moved to Tampa a little while back, and while he still covers the NFC South, we miss his daily input in our local rag.)

Defensive backs coach Tim Lewis bolted for Seattle; this one is particularly intriguing, as he had been rumored of late to be the logical choice to replace Trgovac if he was not retained… and now both of the guys have left, on their own accord, after being offered contracts. Oh, this bodes well; as if losing to Arizona was not bad enough… is it just me, CaroPanFans, or does it seem to you, too, that every time you feel you’re almost out of your funk you get some more crappy Panthers news? Just wondering.

Defensive line coach Sal Sunseri has departed for the University of Alabama, under the tutelage of Nick Saban, no less. The word has been that Sunseri has had a yen for coaching in college football for some time, so even with being a close friend of Fox’s, this one is still not that much of a stretch… and, he had been Peppers’ position coach, after all. We know how that has turned out.

Linebackers coach Ken Flajole has left the building, too, but at least it was to the Rams as defensive coordinator; that one’s a no-brainer.

Now, I saved the best for last. Our old friend Yasinskas still has quite the bead on Carolina happenings, as his sources have divulged to him that three of the four coaching exoduses have been due to the Panthers dragging their feet on offering contract extensions… joy.

CaroPanFans, do not give up hope. Things will get better, and by at least spring we should be able to mostly forget the ugly ending of the 2008 campaign… or, maybe we can just pass the oven without wanting to stick our heads in. Either way, the draft is right around the corner… maybe Mr. Peppers will afford us some decent picks.
