Comebacks Becoming Second Nature for the Panthers

The Panthers are undefeated at home this season, but putting aside their 5-0 home mark, the team is getting good at a new stat this year – that is the stat of the comeback. Sunday’s 27-23 win over the Cards was the third Panthers comeback this year, and considering they are 6-2, that would mean half of their wins would be of the comeback route.

They have comebacks this year vs the Chargers (26-24 win on the last play), Chicago (trailed 17-3 to comeback and win 20-17), and now the Cards (trailed 17-3 only to win 27-23). So is the team simply not starting fast enough, or does it just take them till the second half to finally wake up?

Sunday they just sort of slept walked through the first half, and only were able to manage one John Kasay field goal in the first 30 minutes. Then they fell behind 17-3, and quickly Jake Delhomme and the troops rallied, outscoring the Cardinals 24-6 the rest of the way.

The Panthers had 142 yards in the first half, punted three times, fumbled once, and kicked one field goal. Finding their stride in the second half, they had 234 yards, scored three touchdowns, kicked a field goal, and ended the game with the ball. Quite a turnaround.

You have to wonder when the comeback formula may run out. For now, it’s fun to watch and exciting as well for the fans. For the team, it has to be a concern, and hopefully something they can solve before one of these big games it’s just too late to get on track and deliver another comeback win.
