Running Back a Position the Panthers Want to Build On

Now that DeShaun Foster is history for the Panthers, the team will be keeping their eyes and ears open as they look for a running back to back up DeAngelo Williams.  Today’s Charlotte Observer reports that RB is one area that the Panthers will look to upgrade, but they are confident that Williams will be able to carry the load.  “We feel like we’ve got a good, viable guy in DeAngelo (Williams) and we’re going to have to find someone else,” coach John Fox said. “Obviously, we’re going to have a need there.”

The team may look for a power running back, something they have not had for most of their history.  It makes sense though, as a power back would be a good change of pace to Williams, as well as could get you those tough yards in short yardage situations.  Fox said that good backs are everywhere and come as all types.  “A lot is made of that and it gets printed in the paper a lot, but there are successful backs that are all kinds of shapes and sizes,” Fox said. “The key is finding a good back. We’ve not had a 1,000-yard rusher since Stephen Davis (in 2003), and that was the last time we made a good run (to the Super Bowl). We need to find a guy who can help us be able to run the ball better.”
