Third-String QB Basanez Placed on IR with Wrist Injury

The Panthers have lost third-string quarterback Brett Basanez, as he was placed on injured reserve on Sunday, ending his season two days after he severely sprained his right wrist in a 24-7 preseason loss to the New England Patriots. Basanez had been expected to back up Jake Delhomme and David Carr. “You never like losing a quarterback, no matter what string,” coach John Fox said. In other moves Sunday, the Panthers released seven players: guard Nate Bennett, defensive tackle Brent Curvey, defensive back Kevin Garrett, receiver Jahkeen Gilmore, tackle Eric Graham, safety Jermaine Hardy and defensive tackle Chad Lavalais. The Panthers need to make four more roster moves by 4 p.m. Tuesday.
